History of Waterbury Schools
As of this writing, we are seeking an individual to research the history of Waterbury schools. Our goal is to have a brief profile of each school, the dates of operation, location, and photos if possible. Until then, this page will include random notes about Waterbury schools.
The Municipal Register of the City of Waterbury for the year 1920 estimates the population to be 120,000 and notes that there are 34 schoolhouses representing 458 occupied school rooms (with an additional 2 rooms unoccupied). There were 71 male and 495 female teachers. Aggregate enrollment for the year was reported to be 16,311 children. At that time, the maximum salary allowed was paid to a High School principal - $4,200.
In addition to teaching the children of the city, these schools were used for evening classes - most notably for "Americanization". Cooking, embroidery, swimming, penmanship, and other classes too.....
