Waterbury Census
Census Data for Greater Waterbury
The U.S. Federal Census is the primary source of Greater Waterbury census data available for genealogical research. Researchers should keep in mind that this region originally included parts of what are now three separate Connecticut Counties. Originally settled out of Farmington, the town of Waterbury was originally part of Hartford County. Following recognition by the General Court of Connecticut as the 28th town, Waterbury has since been part of New Haven County. Just across the current town line to the north lies Litchfield County and Hartford County is separated by just one town (Wolcott). As a result, the Greater Waterbury region extends across county lines to include parts of Litchfield County and Hartford County in addition to New Haven County. Several bordering and nearby towns have their origins in early Waterbury — Wolcott, Prospect, Naugatuck, Middlebury (all New Haven County), Watertown, Thomaston, Plymouth (Litchfield County).
The only other known enumerations for the residents of Greater Waterbury were the 1876 Centennial Census for the City of Waterbury and a Connecticut Military Census conducted for World War I.
