Waterbury Hall of Fame

The Silas Bronson Library's Waterbury Hall of Fame includes Waterbury natives or residents who have had a significant impact on the history of Waterbury; individuals recognized throughout the city, state, country or world. The goals of the Waterbury Hall of Fame are to promote an interest in Waterbury history, to educate the public about Waterbury's rich past and present, to highlight the local history resources at the Silas Bronson Library and, through the nomination process, to increase the Library's historical information about Waterbury.

Credit for the idea of a Waterbury Hall of Fame belongs to Michael DeLeo, who was a reference librarian at the Silas Bronson Library. While composing a third edition of "The Waterbury Fact Book," a Library publication of good news of Waterbury, Mr. DeLeo was impressed by the significant accomplishments of many Waterburians, achievements recognized statewide, nationwide and worldwide, but frequently unknown or unsung by City residents. Mr. DeLeo felt these inventors, manufacturers, artists, and athletes needed to be acknowledged in a Waterbury Hall of Fame. With suggestions from Jim Senich, Dr. Lawrence Shea, Jim Sullivan, Harry Cashin, and Gary Bach, Mr. DeLeo's proposal for the Hall of Fame was adopted by the Library Board of Agents in March of 1996. Michael DeLeo (pictured above, 2nd from left) passed away in December 2001, but was recognized for his contributions to promoting Waterbury history through his 2005 induction into the Waterbury Hall of Fame which he helped create.
