Waterbury City Hall
Waterbury City Hall, located at the corner of Grand Street and Field Street in the heart of downtown Waterbury, is one of several historic and architecturally significant buildings found in the city of Waterbury. Waterbury's first City Hall was built in 1869 on West Main Street facing The Green (sometimes referred to as City Center), but was destroyed by fire in 1912. Much of the downtown business district had been destroyed a decade earlier in the catastrophic Waterbury fire of 1902, but the original City Hall had been spared.
The current Waterbury City Hall is a Cass Gilbert design and was begun in July 1914, completed in 1915. In the coming weeks, additional history about this building will be posted on this page, including information about the dedication ceremony and the many other historic events since for which this building has served as a backdrop.
A January 2007 online article by the National Trust for Historic Preservation discussed the current plight of this historic building and the ongoing efforts by some area residents to secure funding for a proper renovation and restoration.
