Mattatuck Historical Society
The Mattatuck Historical Society was founded in 1877 as several in the city were promoting civic pride in celebration of the 200th anniversary of Waterbury. Just one year after the nation celebrated its Centennial, Waterbury had endured and prospered over two centuries. The Society was incorporated in 1902 "to collect and preserve whatever may serve to explain or illustrate the archaeology, the art,
the literature, the history, civil, ecclesiastical or natural of the state of Connecticut, and especially that part thereof
which was anciently known as Mattatuck...."
Much of the original collections of the Mattatuck Historical Society came from the extensive historical library of Dr. Joseph Anderson and were stored in the Bronson Library. The photo at left shows the historic Greene Kendrick house, home of the society for several decades. More information about the Mattatuck Historical Society will be included on this page in the coming weeks - please visit again soon.
The Mattatuck Historical Society moved to its current location in 1987. If you're interested in the history of Waterbury, you'll want to visit the Mattatuck Museum.
