**The Borough of Naugatuck enjoys the influence of Stanford White and others from the firm of McKim, Mead & White, the most notable architects of the early twentieth century, especially in its churches, library and train station. Henry Bacon was mentored by Charles McKim before traveling abroad to study Greek and Roman designs . He later started his own firm and worked with sculptor Daniel Chester French in the Lincoln Memorial project, designed in 1913 and completed in 1922. Henry Bacon is also celebrated for designing the Observatory and other buildings at Wesleyan University, The World War I Memorial at Yale and Union Square Savings Bank in New York City. In 1923, he received from President Harding the Gold Medal of the American Institute of Architects, the occupation's highest honor.

ADDITIONAL DETAIL:
This enchanting residence has been our treasure since 1980. Built in 1916 as a wedding gift to the son of a wealthy industrialist, it is a unique masterpiece. A proper frame house with large living room, sun room a library/study and dining room, and beyond these are pantries, a kitchen, and servants' meal room, on the ground floor. Upstairs are the master bedroom with a sitting room, secondary bedrooms and a linen room. Servant rooms are on the third floor. A beautifully planned house of 1916, with "private" and "public" areas, dignified and in good style.

  • Dining Room 19'8" by 18"10" with fireplace, chandelier, built-in china cabinets and butler's bell under carpet. Butler's Pantry with built-in glassed chestnut cupboards above cabinets and double sink.
  • Kitchen with ample cabinets and center island Jenn-air oven, dishwasher and 8' by 8' walk-in pantry with chestnut shelves.
  • Second kitchen 9' by 16' with chestnut built-ins usable as TV room, play room or office. Lavatory area with two large coat closets.
SECOND FLOOR:

  • Lavatory (claw-foot tub needs fix)
BASEMENT:
  • Several rooms with antique fixtures and chestnut doors.
  • Glenwood gas stove.
Additional Notes:
  • Hardwood floors in the front hall, dining room and library were introduced later and carved around door molding, as the floors originally had white wall-to-wall carpeting.
  • Formal area woodwork paint was originally applied in numerous coats with a cloth, to avoid brush streaks.
  • The large garage was originally heated and has a basement for storage. Automatic door openers are helpful with such large, heavy doors. Also attached is a greenhouse, now also used just for storage
  • Two original large water conditioners, not connected, still grace the basement, for posterity.
  • In addition to the large pantries, there are 12 ample hallway closets for storage.
  • A small footbridge and stream are hidden by shrubbery in the back yard.
  • Despite efforts to keep the home's originality intact, recently 6 mahogany exterior French doors were built for the sunroom.
  • The train station, designed by Bacon in Italian villa style, is just a few hundred yards (down the hill), with Metro-North to NYC.
  • It is also a short walk to the area planned as "Renaissance Place"
    (see http://www.naugatuckrenaissanceplace.com/concept for details.
  • Blueprints of the library have recently been provided to the Mattatuck Museum.
  • Property taxes in 2005: $5,558; Annual oil usage 2004/2005: 2,250 gallons.
